Scripps Proton Therapy Center

When Scripps Health, Scripps Clinical Medical Group and Advanced Particle Therapy collaborated to develop the Proton Therapy Center in San Diego County they turned to Haskell Design Build of Jacksonville, Florida for the design and construction of the facility. Needless to say, there were thousands of things to keep track of when it came to building this 102,000 square foot facility. At a cost of $185,000,000 tracking and fixing deficiencies had to be quick and precise.

After using Projecttalk/Prolog on smaller projects the Haskell team knew they needed to find a plan based system to help them quickly identify and correct jobsite issues.  Project Manager Sateesh Reddy turned to FinishLine Software by Active 3DB to give them the professional edge they needed on this monumental project. “The plan based punchlist expedited the inspection process. It is a large building with lots of systems, so FinishLine’s plan based system greatly helped pin point the locations for the deficiencies."

Although it’s difficult to quantify any kind of Return on Investment with so many variables on a project of  this nature, the old adage “Time is Money” certainly holds true. It is clear that using FinishLine saved  hundreds of hours when it came to identifying and correcting deficiencies, thus saving thousands of dollars.

Reddy reported that the Haskell group used iPads and ASUS tablets on the job. Both types of tablets worked very well and were totally compatible with the FinishLine software.  One of the greatest features of the software is the ability to actually take a picture of the issue and include it in the report that is sent to the subcontractor. This leaves no doubt as to exactly what the issue is that needs to be corrected.

The completed Proton Therapy Center includes sixteen exam rooms, fourteen physician’s offices as well as MRI and CT scan support services. The centerpiece of the facility is the ninety ton cyclotron which accelerates protons to roughly 100,000 miles per second and can be shaped in three dimensions to protect surrounding tissue. The facility, which is one of only eight in the country, is expected to serve over 2400 patients a year.

When asked if Haskell would use FinishLine on any future projects Reddy responded “We certainly will if I have anything to say about it.” When asked if he had any last comments about FinishLine Reddy replied “The entire team at Finishline was awesome from training, to setting up templates, to the on-going service. You guys did a great job!”
